From these, as a group and with the help of Matt, we came up with the final two. These are the logos as they are at the moment, but are currently being worked on to show their full potential so we can eventually come up with one logo.

Common Traits noticed during observation:
*Older people were always in a hurry and had not time to talk.
*Young people were interested in interviews and had a lot of personal insight on the park
*Drains had a very unpleasant smell.
*Common request for benches around grass area.
*Some people enjoyed indigenousness performances/music while others disliked it and felt it to be a distraction.
*Many people interviewed were tourists or had a foreign accent.
*People appreciated the fresh-grassed area, as opposed to the overall busyness of Circular Quay. Area is also seen as peaceful.
*The seagulls are an issue and a lot of people saw them as one of the main downfalls of the park.

-Scenery and gardens are nice. It’s good to see the Harbour Bridge and Opera house. These iconic views of Sydney are great to be apart of.

- Seating, somewhere you can sit with covering, maybe an ampi-theatre and some kind of protection from the weather.

-Didgeridoos are cool, it’s good culture. It would be boring without the cultural performance.

-The MCA building. There was an exhibition sculpture brought outside of the museum into the park area one time I was here and it was quite nice.

-Surrounded by too much advertising. Everywhere looks the same, too repetitive.

-The far back side of the park is barely recognised when you walk through, you don’t really see it and it need’s something to focus more attention.

-Not much. It’s quite a nice quiet place and I like the distance from the Opera House because it’s so noisy on the other side. I come here to get away.

ANNAH AND KATIE’S INTERVIEW RESULTS

On the day of our interviews, the weather was horrible. It was pouring with rain and freezing cold. Due to the miserable weather there were hardly any people in the area. The sewage smell was unpleasant and and more distinct towards the back of the park. We were only able to obtain three interviews, as there was pretty much no one in the area. However with the three interviews of which we conducted, the results were very similar with the interviews that were carried out last Monday.

Interview 1: Female tourist from England.

Answers
1. No, I have not used this park, I just arrived from England yesterday and this is my first time to Australia, and the weather is horrible today so probably wouldn’t get the chance to use it whilst I am here.

2. It has a beautiful view. It would be perfect to sit here on a sunny day and eat your lunch. It such a lovely atmosphere around circular quay, I love it!

3. Well from what I can see there are not too many options to sit other than the grass. So maybe better seating areas. Well I don’t know if this smell is usually here but I think if there was a possibility of getting rid of it would make the park a much more pleasant area.

1. Yes I have, this is my third time visiting Australia. It’s a nice place to sit and just relax. I often come here and sit on the grass in the summer and read a book.

2. I like how its very natural, the grass is in quite good condition, I also love being able to listen to the Aboriginal music which often plays right next to the park.

3. When it does rain like today, the grass gets very muddy. So I am not sure if it is possible, but maybe better drainage or even an undercover area.

1. Well I run through here around three to four times a week. I do a run from the city around the rocks and circular quay. I sometimes eat my lunch here during the week if I end up getting a break!

2. It’s good to get out of the building and coming out into the fresh air. I like how this park gets a lot of sunlight, and that there is a lot of areas of grass to sit. When it’s busy you can still have your own place.

3. I think that people would greatly benefit from more seating. I think that the park at the moment blends in with the surroundings.

HELEN’S INTERVIEWS

I visited the park on Monday with both Priscilla and Lauren and while they were busy collaborating interviews on this very rainy day, I decided to re-visit the park the next day. Tuesday again was both rainy and windy but there were still plenty of possible interviewees lurking around.

I just live across the road, so I try to come here nearly every second to walk my dog.

The view of the water and the relaxed atmosphere.

Well I usually sit on the grass most days but today it’s a bit too wet for that, so maybe a covered area.

It’s nice just to be able to get out of the building and relax in the park.

Sculptures would nice or even an entertainment sector.

I don’t really think it needs changing.

Just an idea, this could be something quite interesting to add to the park, kind of like a feature. The frame could capture the view of the Opera house and surrounding landscape. It could also act like a barrier so that people do not tread through the garden. It also ties in with the Art gallery with the whole picture frame idea.

This is just a seating idea I think that we should consider. As rain is a problem the sandstone dries quite quickly and will blend in with the surrounding building in the area.

As Helen had to leave early today, she has offered to go back tomorrow to see if she can get any more interviews and photos.

Also the fact that Annah and Katie were busy earning wages today, they have also suggested that they will do the same thing (interviews and photos) on the weekend, which will also give us a more holistic view of the types of patronage the park actually gets. Two weekdays and a weekend at different times will cover all bases i think.

From what we saw today and the people that actually gave two hoots, after discussion, we believe that our target audience would essentially be averaged at young adults. This will need more discussion though so that outcome has not yet been set in stone.

We also need to do something about the smell. There are two big vents on either side of a walkway that waft this awful sewerage smell around the whole area that i’m sure turns a lot of people off. I was even glad to leave as it was making us all feel a bit queezy.

There is also a bird problem that you will probably see in a lot of photos. I was unfortunately changing the battery in my camera when a huge flock of seagulls and pidgeons seems to attack this group of teenagers so much that they completely left the area.

So as you can see, we learnt a lot today and with two more days of research to come, who knows what else we will learn.
